Many Consumers are unclear of the Efficiency Rating phase out of Seer and the January 2023 Efficiency rating release of Seer 2. Here is what we know
In the past, the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps was measured by SEER, the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Beginning January 1st 2023, however, these systems’ efficiency is now measured by SEER2.
The Department of Energy put these changes into effect do to the fact that technology and testing methods have improved so much over the years that they were able to create new standards with even more accurate overall efficiency ratings. Potentially, this is good news for consumers.
HERE’S HOW THE NEW RULES AFFECT US
All residential central air systems must have a SEER2 rating of at least 13.4 (previously 14 SEER).
All heat pumps must have a SEER2 rating of at least 14.3 (previously 15 SEER).
Don’t let the new lower rating numbers fool you, the newly revised testing procedures are an entirely different way of calculating energy efficiency, thereby is a different metric all together. The new procedures are more representative of system operation in typical home installations. It varies by equipment type but generally, minimum efficiencies are increasing by about 7-10%, or 1 SEER in the traditional system.
A&M can explain these changes to you in detail and help you make the decision that’s best for your home and your comfort when we provide a Free in home estimate.
SUPPLY AND COST CHALLENGES
Due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re still experiencing some delays in the supply chain. And those delays are expected to worsen due to these new regulations. In addition, prices are expected to climb. If your AC or heat pump is 15 years old or older, we strongly suggest you replace it now to get a jump on the demand for the new equipment and to avoid the higher prices soon to come.
